Every year, more than 200 women in Singapore are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Most cases are caused by persistent infection with high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).
The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable. Regular screening, such as a PapTest or HPV test, can detect changes in the cervix before they develop into cancer, allowing for early intervention.
HPV vaccination also plays an important role in prevention by protecting against HPV strains that can cause cervical cancer.
Even if you feel healthy, screening is recommended if you meet the eligibility criteria. You may have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer if you:

You may be eligible for screening if you are a woman aged 25 and above, have had sexual intercourse, and hold a valid Blue or Orange CHAS card or Public Assistance (PA) card.
The screening is fully paid by 365 Cancer Prevention Society for participants who meet the programme’s eligibility criteria.
A PapTest is a simple and relatively painless screening test that checks for abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. During the test, a doctor or nurse gently inserts an instrument called a speculum into the vagina to view the cervix and collect a small sample of cells for examination.
The collected cells are then examined under a microscope for any abnormal or precancerous changes. Detecting these changes early allows them to be treated before they develop into cervical cancer. A Pap smear may also detect cervical cancer at an early stage, when treatment is generally more effective.
Your confirmation letter tells you how to contact the clinic you selected during registration. You arrange the date and time directly with them, so you can choose what fits around work or family.
If your screening results are abnormal, the doctor will explain your results and discuss the next steps, including any further assessment or follow-up care that may be required.
