Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know I need nutritional support?

Nutritional support is valuable at every stage of your cancer journey. You may benefit from consulting a dietitian if you:

  • Are preparing for treatment: You are unsure what to eat before starting cancer treatment
  • Are managing side effects: You are experiencing treatment side effects that make eating difficult
  • Are transitioning to recovery: You want to learn how to eat well after your treatment ends
  • Need weight management: You are looking for healthy ways to manage your weight
  • Have co-existing conditions: You need help managing other health issues, such as diabetes or high cholesterol, through your diet.

Our registered dietitians provide practical tips and personalised advice to help you feel stronger and support your overall recovery.

At your initial appointment, our dietitian will perform a comprehensive Nutrition Assessment. This helps us understand your current nutrition status and health requirements, allowing us to provide the most effective and personalised advice for you.

During the assessment, the dietitian will discuss:

  • Your medical condition and cancer diagnosis
  • Any treatments or medications you are currently receiving
  • Social history such as your age, working status, and your support system
  • Your height, weight, and any recent blood test results (if available)
  • Symptoms that may affect your intake, such as nausea, poor appetite, or difficulty swallowing
  • Your usual eating patterns and food preferences
  • Your current level of physical activity

This assessment allows us to partner with you to create a practical, supportive nutrition plan—whether your goal is managing side effects, building strength, or supporting long-term recovery.

Your initial consultation will take approximately 60 minutes. This duration allows the dietitian sufficient time to conduct a comprehensive Nutrition Assessment and understand your specific needs in detail.

Follow-up sessions are typically shorter, lasting about 45 minutes.

The frequency of your follow-up sessions will be tailored to your clinical condition and personal health goals. Following your initial assessment, our dietitian may recommend a schedule such as:

  • Bi-weekly: If you require close monitoring or frequent adjustments to your nutritional plan.
  • Monthly: For moderate support and ongoing guidance as you progress.
  • Every 2–3 Months: If your condition is stable and well-managed, to ensure long-term wellness.

Your appointment schedule will be fully personalised, with the flexibility to adapt as your needs and progress evolve.

The total number of follow-up sessions depends on your medical condition, nutritional requirements, and personal health goals. Following each consultation, your registered dietitian will discuss your progress with you and arrange any necessary follow-up appointments.

Yes, our dietitians provide guidance on dietary supplements where appropriate. While our primary focus is helping you meet your nutritional requirements through a well-balanced diet, we recognise that supplements may be necessary in certain cases. If nutritional deficiencies arise due to specific health conditions or dietary restrictions, our dietitians will recommend suitable supplements based on evidence-based guidelines, your individual health needs, and socio-economic considerations.
